On Dauphin Street this morning, I noticed this bumper sticker on a white Ford F-150 truck with a tool box:
PRACTICE RANDOM KINDNESS AND SENSELESS ACTS OF BEAUTY
You remember that fad from a few years back, I’m sure. Not exactly the sort of touchie-feelie sentiment you expect to see on an F-150 with a toolbox, nor one that you associate with youngish black men like the driver of the truck. That sticker was on the left side of the bumper. Coming up on the truck at a stop light, I saw on the right side of the bumper another, smaller, harder-to-read—gold-ish lettering on a red background—sticker:
I NEED MORE MONEY AND POWER AND LESS S**T FROM YOU PEOPLE
Maybe the truck already had one of the stickers when he bought it, and he added the other one. Maybe each was added by a different previous owner, not him at all. Maybe it wasn’t even his truck. Or maybe he’s a very deeply conflicted man.
