My favorite poem:

Royalty

He was a plain man
and learned no latin.

Having left all gold behind
he dealt out peace
to all us wild ones
and the weather.

He ate fish, bread,
country wine and God’s will.

Dust sandaled his feet.

He wore purple only once
and that was an irony.

I sort of half-recognize that--who's it by? I like it.

I like that poem, Beth.

but anyone with an ear quickly discerns that it has its own shimmering rhythm, and that each poem has a definite graceful shape

I have only a little appreciation for poetry due to some kind of personal defect, but I did enjoy that first poem you posted in particular and it read like a poem to me even though it has no structure. I liked it and "The Room."

It really bugs me that y'all are asleep when I'm awake!

I'm not asleep, although I hope to be in about an hour. Just haven't been near a computer for the past few hours. You posted this comment at about 8pm my time, which is a couple of hours ago now. It really confuses me that it's Wednesday afternoon for you.

Pentimento posted one of my favorite Merwin poems a while back...let's see if I can find it...ah yes, here it is. I think you might like it. It's from a later book than The Lice, maybe later than any of the four I mentioned here. Like I said, his work got less dark after about 1970 or so.

well, to be sure, I never know really what time it is there unless Nick is in the States! Then I know exactly what time it is and when I *ought* to get a phone call from him. :)

Are you in the same time zone as NC?

One hour earlier. NC is what's called Eastern time, Alabama is Central. (There are two more, going west: Mountain and Pacific).

Gotcha
