I think this is not only a leaf but some part of the flower apparatus, as the other leaves don't have this purple stalk. The flowers are purple.

I happened to be doing something or other that required being sort of behind this tree, between it and the wall, and just happened to look up and catch the sun on it that way.

Maybe it's just new growth and will change as it grows--like that tri-colored heron.
I was just thinking a couple of days ago that I missed pictures of beautiful things, both here and elsewhere.

It definitely has something to do with a flower. If I can work it into my busy schedule I'll post a picture of the way it looks now. I didn't follow the transition but it appears that a stalk with a flower has emerged where this leaf, which is now quite large (only three or four inches here) comes out of the main trunk.
